Mobility Scooters

Mobility scooters are considered a type of Power Operated Vehicle (POV). They are suitable for people with limited mobility but who still have capacity to safely transfer on and off the scooter and operate the hand controls.  Mobility scooters differ significantly from wheelchairs, which can be pushed by another person.

While anyone can purchase a mobility scooter of this type, most people do so on the recommendation of a doctor or physical therapist.  It’s a good idea to consult your physician to make sure you choose the best type of mobility aid for your needs.

When POVs are considered medically necessary, Medicare, Medicaid or a private insurance company may cover all or part of the cost.  Basic scooters can cost as little as $700 to $900, and scooter with more features can cost more that $3,000 depending on the features and the mobility products manufacturer (Pride Mobility Corporation, Invacare, etc.)

When considering a mobility aid, there are many important things to think about.  A careful analysis of your needs, and the activities you hope to be able to accomplish with a scooter will help point you towards the appropriate model.

Factors to consider when choosing a mobility aid

  • Size
  • Ease of use
  • Maneuverability
  • Weight capacity
  • Transportability
  • Power source
  • Adaptive modifications available?

When deciding on which mobility scooter is best for you, also think a bout the places and ways you hope to use it.  Make a careful assessment of your home.  Be sure to measure doorways and hallways to make sure the scooter you select will fit, and you will be able to easily maneuver it through your home.  If there are there steps, you may need a ramp to get in and out easily.   Doorways, which can be hard to hold open while steering the scooter are another potential obstacle that should be evaluated.

If you are planning to take your mobility scooter with you to shops, restaurants and offices, you’ll need an easy way to transport the unit.  Some scooter can be quickly folded.  For people with physical impairments who can’t manipulate or lift a scooter,  lifts can be fitted for a car.
